Getting records and information

Know the difference between asking informally, disclosure processes, access-to-information regimes and subpoenas/orders.

Learn

Different records are obtained through different mechanisms. Start by identifying who holds the record and why you are entitled to seek it. Government access regimes, court disclosure, subpoenas, police/prosecution material, privacy access and informal requests are not interchangeable.

See it

Before sending a broad demand for “everything”, create a targeted list of records tied to a specific issue or allegation.

Try it

Draft a records schedule with columns: record, holder, date range, why relevant, request mechanism, status.

Complete the mission

Build a targeted records-request schedule.
